John Fernie passed away October
29th
He was born Dec. 17, 1919
in Dundee, Scotland, a son of John Mitchell Kerr
and Violet (Daniels) Fernie.
He graduated from schools in Great Britain
and studied art at the University
of Manchester in England and Glasgow
University in Scotland.
He served for more than five
years as a flight lieutenant pilot in the
Royal Air Force during World
War II.
He was a self employed freelance
artist and had illustrated
for many commercial accounts
and magazines in Toronto, Canada
and New York Cityincluding
the "Saturday Evening Post"
and "Cosmopolitan."
Most recently, he had done watercolor
paintings for the Naval Reserve
Association, Fleet Reserve Association,
Navy Memorial Association,
National Parks of Gettysburg,
National Rifle Association,Boat
US and Powerboat.
He was actively involved
in fine art shows at New York City's City
Center and at the Illustrators'
Clubs of New York City and Westport,
Conn. He received several
awards for his art including awards from
Norwich University in Vermont
and from the Berkshire
Art Gallery. Presently, some
of Mr. Fernie's artwork is on display at
Wright Gallery in Cape Porpoise,
Maine. He also has paintings in
collections in Toronto, Canada;
London, England; Spain
and throughout the United
States.
He was a member of the American
Artists Professional League at the
Salmagundi Club in New York
City, the Southern Vermont Art Association
and was an associate member
of the American Watercolor Society.
He also enjoyed racing Alfa
Romeo sportscars.
